Guests.
Sometimes you get a polite heads-up.
Other times, it's a “be there in 20!” text—while your place looks like it’s been hit by a toddler tornado... and you don’t even have a toddler.

But don’t freak out. You’re not aiming for perfection—you’re aiming for just clean enough to impress. Here’s how to fake a clean house in 20 minutes flat.

Before You Start: Set a Timer. Turn Up the Music. Go.

Seriously. Music keeps you moving. A timer keeps you honest.
You’ve got 20 minutes—ready, set, clean!

Minute 1–3: Grab a Basket and Scoop the Clutter

Forget organizing. Right now, it’s all about hiding the chaos.

  • Grab a laundry basket (or even a trash bag in a pinch).
  • Toss in everything lying around—shoes, random clothes, mail, chargers, whatever.
  • Stash it in your bedroom or any room guests won’t see. Close the door.
    Boom—insta-tidy.

Minute 4–7: Surfaces and Smells

Time to trick the senses.

  • Wipe visible surfaces—kitchen counters, coffee table, dining table.
  • If you’ve got wipes or a multi-surface spray, even better.
  • Light a candle, spray air freshener, or open a window for five minutes.
Smells clean? Guests think it is clean.

Minute 8–12: Attack the Bathroom

This is non-negotiable. Guests always end up here.

  • Wipe down the sink and toilet seat.
  • Swap in a clean hand towel.
  • Close the shower curtain (don’t let ‘em see your shampoo jungle).
  • Empty the trash if it’s gross.
  • Check for toilet paper—trust us.

Minute 13–16: Fluff, Fold, and Fake It

Now it’s time for the illusion of cozy cleanliness.

  • Fluff the couch pillows and straighten the blankets.
  • Make the bed—or just smooth the comforter and hide the mess underneath.
  • Close doors to messy rooms. Out of sight = out of mind.

Minute 17–20: Floors & Finishing Touches

Almost there. Time for the final sweep.

  • Do a super-quick vacuum or broom run through high-traffic areas.
  • Hide dirty dishes in the sink or dishwasher.
  • Spray one last mist of something nice smelling near the entrance.
Guests will walk in and go, “Wow, it smells so clean in here!” Mission accomplished.

What Not to Stress About

Skip the stuff no one notices:

  • Dusting shelves? Nope.
  • Organizing your pantry? Nah.
  • Cleaning under the couch? Don’t even think about it.

You Did It.

You didn’t clean the whole house—you cleaned the right parts.
And that’s what matters when guests are walking in with smiles, not white gloves.
